Recap of Kaarl Ngara, Cultural Burning Nyungar Way Symposium

3 Jul 2020

Thank you to all those who attended the Kaarl Ngara, Cultural Burning Nyungar Way Symposium on May 21. Several hundred of us came together online to hear from Oral McGuire, Dr Noel Nannup OAM, Aunty Elizabeth Hayden, Dr Richard Walley OAM, Victor Steffensen (guest keynote) and Barry McGuire, hosted by Professor Emeritus Colleen Hayward AM. We were also fortunate to be joined by Jade Dolman who created the artwork above during the symposium (please don’t share outside of this context).

This Aboriginal-led symposium discussed the urgent need for Nyungar-led and guided joint-management of burning practices on Nyungar land in order to better care for and heal Nyungar country. Victor also offered his perspectives on how related work is unfolding on the national level.

Since the symposium numerous senior leaders in business, government and the not-for-profit sector have been invited to and attended Oral’s farm with Nyungar Elders and leaders to decide on next steps.
